Portland's most famous holiday street has been decorating since 1932, when it began as a competition among neighbors, and today dozens of houses on the four-block lane light up nightly in late December. A booth serves free cocoa and cider, and December 19-20 are pedestrian-only nights; visitors are advised to park five or six blocks away.
Best time to arrive. Sunset in Portland is around 4:28 PM in mid-December, fully dark by about 5:02 PM. A typical December night here bottoms out near 36°F, so dress for standing around outside.
